ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUE (ART)

Massages make all the difference to tense muscles

Active Release Technique (ART) is a soft tissue movement based technique that incorporates active stretching and hand pressure. ART treats problems with overused muscles, soft tissue inflammatory disorders of the joints, tendonitis, ligament injuries, fascia inflammation and compressed nerves.

What Conditions Can Be Treated Using Active Release?

  • Headaches
  • Back Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Shin Splints
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Knee Problems
  • Tennis Elbow

These are just a few of the many specific conditions that can be treated successfully with lasting effects using ART.

ART is commonly used to treat conditions related to adhesions, commonly known as scar tissue, in overused muscles. Overused muscles and other soft tissue can change in three ways; acute conditions known as a pulled or torn muscle, accumulation of small tears known as micro-trauma and oxygen deprivation known as hypoxia. Scar tissue binds and locks down surrounding muscles that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker and the motion of muscles and joints are altered compressing nearby nerves. As a result, tissues suffer from decreased blood supply, reduced range of motion, loss of strength and pain. If a nerve becomes compressed you may feel numbness, tingling, weakness, burning or a combination of the symptoms.

What is an Active Release treatment?

Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. Dr. Rivano uses his hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Using hand pressure and patient directed movement, Dr. Rivano works to remove the adhesions caused by tight muscles and increase blood flow. The motion generally follows the direction of blood and lymphatic flow allowing the adhesions to be broken up. Patient involvement during treatment is an advantage of ART, as people who are active participants in their own healthcare tend to experience better outcomes.

The treatment protocols incorporate over 500 specific moves that are unique to ART. They allow Dr. Rivano to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART is not a cookie-cutter approach; it is unique to each patient and their condition. The goal of ART is to restore the proper movement of tissues and muscles, release trapped nerves and rid the patient of pain.
